A Community Art Space Supporting Independent Art Practitioners
[hearth] is a community art space initiative by Art Outreach to support independent Singapore-based practitioners with free space and micro-grant funding to create and exhibit their work. We offer a purpose-built, museum quality space in Gillman Barracks as a platform for diverse mediums and rich artistic explorations, often engaging with social or environmental concerns. Since launching in 2020, we have supported over 60 projects and 220 practitioners (Read more about the origin of HEARTH here).
Micro-grants Available

All applicants may request for a micro-grant from Art Outreach of up to S$500 to defray direct project costs (including art materials, installation, printing, host fees, IMDA licence fees, insurance, third party fees).

As the micro-grant may not cover all the costs of mounting your project, you are encouraged to supplement it with additional sources of funding (i.e. grants from other organisations*, sale of artworks or publications**, workshop fees, fundraising).

*Please note that projects at HEARTH are not eligible to apply for grants from the National Arts Council (i.e. Presentation & Participation Grant, Production Grant, Market and Audience Development Grant) as Art Outreach is a National Arts Council Major Company Grant Recipient and HEARTH is, by extension, already funded by the scheme.

**Art Outreach does not take a cut of sales.

Eligibility

We welcome applications from Singapore-based independent practitioners above the age of 18. You may apply to use the space individually or as a group for an exhibition, to use as an open studio, or to present public programmes. Please see below for examples of past supported projects.

Please note there are some restrictions around content and installation. For more details, download the application guidelines.

Art Outreach was very supportive and flexible with our art making journey in the HEARTH space. They put a lot of effort to help promote and share our creation with the public.

The HEARTH space allowed me to view my artworks from a different perspective

The arts community has been hit hard by the global pandemic and artists are finding it very difficult to sustain their practice. The HEARTH initiative to share space free-of-charge with art practitioners for their independent projects is excellent and important.

I spent 8 days working on large scale artworks at HEARTH, but that week was as productive as a month (or even more) in my own studio.
