About the event
After leading a charity for four years, Ng Tze Yong joined his family business Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop as an apprentice craftsman, learning from his 92-year grandmother and 71-year old father.
In this personal sharing, Ng will delve into the challenges and insights of running a heritage business in the 21st century, and the thought process behind their many innovative initiatives that aim to introduce the public to ancient legends - from experiential learning workshops, to codifying knowledge through technology.
Ng will also give a glimpse into the the ancient skill of crafting the effigies and the important symbols used to identify characters, which involve various elements like clothing, accessories, poses, facial features, and more.
Important things to note
- The sharing will comprise a 40min presentation via slides and a 20min Q&A. Thereafter, guests are invited to linger and visit “Off the Wall: Modern Wisdoms”, an innovative new exhibition series by Art Outreach which features local artists’ live painting murals — in this case inspired by Chinese mythology and traditions — which can be purchased as customised fine art prints. Displayed alongside the murals are a selection of antique deconsecrated effigies from the private collection of Say Tian Hng.
- Admission is free
- Due to limited slots, registration is required
- Photos of the workshop may be taken and used for publicity purposes.
- Synopsis subject to minor changes.
- Conducted in English.
