leaking fishtank reflects on the relationships 5 young artists have developed with life under water. Through confrontations with agency, speculative narratives and prospects of transformation, the exhibition becomes an exercise in investigating the place of the human artist across increasingly post-human dialogue.
The exhibition features old and new works spanning a wide range of formats; ranging across installation, video, durational activations and virtual reality. Through diverse presentations, artists expound beyond (while taking care not to neglect) utilitarian rhetorics of animal conservation in favour of fostering kinship with non-human life–proposing modes of thinking and being that reconsider the relationships we have with ourselves, with each other and with aquatic animal life.
Comprising of graduates across LASALLE and NAFA, leaking fishtank gathers emerging artists that have developed themes and creative research surrounding aquatic life independently from each other. The Hearth presentation would therefore serve not just to present their convergent and diverging outcomes; but also to platform conversations between young practices with similar scopes of interest with the hopes of engendering future collaborations.
About the Artist(s)
2point013 was founded in 2018 by Koh Kai Ting and Aw Boon Xin, drawing its name from the sci-fi short story “THE OPPOSITE AND THE ADJACENT” by Chinese writer Liuyang. As a collective, 2point013 questions conventional knowledge systems and correlational worldviews. They work with a broad spectrum of collaborators, from sewing workers to indigenous hunters and policymakers, aiming to transcend the limitations of established knowledge.
Luna Chang is a screen and lens-based artist and a freelance creative. Their research interests include the intersections of identity, cyberfeminism and gender, social forms of art, and urban practices within the digital realm. Luna’s current practice explores the body in relation to care and agency, and how it can be presented through photography.
Siew Guang Hong is an interdisciplinary artist. He utilises biology and anatomical investigation to propose new ways of understanding non-normative subjectivities. Exploring assemblage and abject aesthetics, he develops posthumanist modalities to queer autobiography and absurd obliteration.
Nathan Tan Yew Wai is an artist, printmaker, and freshwater aquarist known for his exploration of Singapore’s freshwater bodies and natural landscapes. His practice is deeply rooted in capturing the subtle trace of human presence in overlooked corners of the city, employing methods ranging from found objects to underwater documentation and observation. Through his proficient and stylistically varied printmaking techniques, Nathan offers audiences windows into his ecosystemic narratives, addressing environmental and anthropological concerns.
