Of leaves, rocks, and the marks of time

Alpana Vij

Solo Exhibition

27 Apr - 5 May 2024, 11am to 7pm

‘'Of leaves, rocks, and the marks of time’', a solo exhibition by Alpana Vij, explores the transience and interconnection inherent in the natural world.

Delving into the interplay of fragility and resilience in nature, the works are inspired by observing the passage of time through the marks nature leaves on surfaces – in the erosion, decay, and rust that add a patina to our landscapes – and in the fallen, withered leaves that speak of the cycle of life.

In bearing witness to nature’s ways, Vij seeks to emphasise the intrinsic value of things. About encountering deep lessons from simple things in our everyday environment, when we choose to pause, reflect, and observe with an unconditioned gaze.

About the Artist(s)

Alpana Vij is a Singapore based contemporary artist. Her practice employs painting, found objects, photography and video to explore themes of perception and what constitutes ‘objective reality’. She is inspired by the Buddhist concept of śūnyatā or emptiness that focuses on the transitory and ephemeral nature and interconnectedness of all phenomena. She seeks to use her ritualized and meditative art making as a reflexive process to question and understand these teachings and to create immersive experiences that poetically engage the viewer in a dialogue.

Alpana graduated with a BFA from College of Art, New Delhi and received an MAFA from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore.
