With the support from Art Outreach Singapore, we are fortunate enough to kickstart the preparation for “生 rebirth” as one of the key installations of “醉生夢死 erosion”. “醉生夢死 erosion” is an immersive multidisciplinary exhibition interweaving visuals arts, performance arts and technological arts.


Reflecting on the hardships of the pandemic and the rise of virtual communication, artist Benedict Yu and The erosion Collective present “生 rebirth”– an experimental and participatory installation. The exhibition hopes to revisit the collaborative strength of people and communities during this tough time.


During the period of the exhibition, we are able to see how one White Spider Lily is able to grow into a garden contributed by volunteers from all over the world.


White Spider Lilies (彼岸花 “Bi An Hua” in Mandarin) are often mentioned in East Asia's floral languages which describe the conceptual idea of "crossing from the physical world to the spiritual world." By folding these paper flowers, volunteers along with the artist are able to commemorate the victims of the pandemic. Some of the volunteers who have lost their family members, friends, or colleagues, translate their complex emotions and sorrow into the process of paper folding. Through virtual gatherings, people across the globe were also able to share difficult yet meaningful conversations.


Each flower takes 2 hours to make, from cutting 8 pieces of 10cm x 10cm of squares of A4 printing paper, to gluing the petals. Each process takes a tremendous focus and dedication. Some volunteers have expressed the paper folding process as an activity that takes place in their worlds of constant flux and chaos, being at peace in their minds, and joy for the small accomplishments in lives.There are over 70 volunteers that had dedicated a total of 900 hours to this healing process.
