Explore stories that food inspires
The second edition of Off the Wall presents works by Charmaine Chen,
Lee Wan Xiang, and Wu Yanrong. Titled Nourish, this edition invites exploration of the multifaceted idea of food and nourishment through the unique perspectives of these artists.
Nourish delves into the literal and metaphorical meanings of food, celebrating its significance as a source of sustenance, a symbol of heritage, and a cornerstone of community life.
Over the next two months, the art space will transform into a dynamic canvas, where artists will live-paint murals that interpret the theme of food in diverse and imaginative ways. From the warmth of communal meals to the rich tapestry of food history, each mural tells a unique story, inviting viewers to reflect on the various roles food plays in our lives.
This theme explores how food brings comfort and warmth, evokes memories of home and family, and serves as sustenance essential for survival and growth. It highlights food's power to foster connections and community, its cultural narratives and heritage, and the vibrant spaces where food is prepared, sold, and enjoyed. The evolution of food practices and the interconnected systems that sustain them are integral to this exploration.
Nourish promises to be a feast for the senses, blending the personal and collective experiences of food into a visual and emotional journey. Join us as we celebrate the art of nourishment and the stories that food inspires.

Charmaine Chen
Charmaine Chen, whose creative journey is rooted in industrial design, finds a sense of ease and peace in the tactile nature of her work as a sign painter. It was while residing in Sydney over an
eight-year stint that a deep curiosity led her to discover the revival of the traditional craft of sign painting and gold leaf gilding. Charmaine found herself entranced by the passage of time as she wielded a brush for the first time. She immersed herself in the sign painting community, training under skilled masters of the craft, and has been dedicated to the field ever since.
Over the past decade, Charmaine’s commitment to the art form has been unwavering, continuously honing her practice with fervour, relishing in a belief that the trade has taught her—one can never be too good. Now based in Singapore, Charmaine works mainly with enamel and gold leaf on wood and glass substrates, blending traditional techniques with the modernity of the local landscape.
Her work exudes an old-world charm and can be seen across the island on signboards, storefront fascias, and windows. Remaining steadfast in her mission to preserve the art form, Charmaine’s work aims to stir up a sense of nostalgia, believing wholeheartedly in the adage that
“Old is Gold.”
Lee Wan Xiang
Lee Wan Xiang (they/them) creates drawings as a process of
self-inquiry and play while reflecting on queerness, identity, and belonging. Through intuitive mark-making in various mediums, writing, and illustration, Wan Xiang seeks ways to encounter tenderness and visualise yearnings for connection.
Wan Xiang holds a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, after graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. Their work delves deeply into the intersections of personal and collective identity, using art as a therapeutic and exploratory tool.
By engaging with themes of vulnerability and strength, Wan Xiang’s creations offer profound insights into the human condition, fostering a dialogue that bridges personal introspection and broader societal narratives. Their commitment to exploring and expressing the nuances of identity through multidisciplinary approaches, zines, illustrations has established Wan Xiang as a poignant voice in contemporary art.
Wu Yanrong
Wu Yanrong is a Singaporean painter who has a penchant for oddly shaped objects and seeks to capture their essence on paper. Her style of painting is influenced by her background in Chinese calligraphy and her work as a graphic designer, allowing her to amalgamate elements of traditional and modern-contemporary work.
Likening her practice to the balance between structure and spontaneity, Yanrong’s art reflects a harmonious blend of precision and fluidity. She graduated with a BA in Communication Design from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and has since exhibited and worked on projects both locally and internationally. Yanrong’s unique approach to composition and form challenges conventional perspectives, inviting viewers to engage with the subtle dialogues between space, form, and texture in her paintings.
Her work is celebrated for its evocative power and its ability to transcend the ordinary, making her a distinctive presence in the contemporary art scene. By integrating her calligraphic roots with contemporary aesthetics, Yanrong crafts a visual language that is both timeless and innovative, capturing the ephemeral beauty of everyday objects through her dynamic brushwork.
